The Kalgyani Project by Sakshi

Legal Literacy | Microlearning | Gender Justice
MoU with Government
Sakshi has signed an MoU with the Ministry of Rural Development, National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) to implement The KalGyani Project across India. This partnership gives Sakshi access to 10 million women/rural households through Self-Help Groups (SHGs), Cluster-Level Federations (CLFs), and State Rural Livelihood Missions (SRLMs), to strengthen legal literacy and interrupt the cycle of gender-based violence (GBV).
The Problem
India has robust gender-based laws, but they often remain underutilised due to low awareness and systemic barriers. In 2022, over 4.45 lakh crimes were reported against women, but 99.1% of sexual violence cases went unreported. Social stigma, patriarchal backlash, and lack of accessible legal support prevent survivors from seeking justice. Most women and girls do not know their rights, the laws that protect them, or how to access help.
The KalGyani Solution
KalGyani uses microlearning and storytelling to demystify the law and empower communities. Grounded in the Theory of Planned Behavior, it works to shift knowledge, attitudes, and practices to create sustainable behaviour change and collective action against violence.
Interventions
- Build community-level resource persons to support survivors and catalyse change
- Strengthen Gender Resource Centres (GRCs) as legal literacy and support hubs
- Link legal awareness with collective action to address violence against women and girls (VAWG)
- Empower communities to advocate for justice and challenge harmful norms
What We’re Creating
- 1320 short films in 22 languages dramatising real-life gender-based violence scenarios
- 17,160 Microlearning Videos decoding legal rights into short, relatable, multilingual content
- Customisable learning modules for Gender Point Persons, Master Trainers, and SHG women
- Training pathways aligned with GRC handbooks and gender curricula
Why Microlearning Matters
Microlearning breaks down complex legal concepts into short, accessible, and culturally resonant videos. This format ensures:
Retention through storytelling and repetition
Accessibility across literacy levels and languages
Agency for SHG women as peer educators and change agents
Scale via mobile phones, community platforms, and GRCs
Research-backed: Microlearning improves understanding, boosts recall, and enables real-time application.

- Protection of Women from Domestic Violence (PWDV) Act, 2005
